Biography
Aviva Slesin is a documentary filmmaker. She won an Academy Award for The Ten Year Lunch: The Wit and Legend of the Algonquin Round Table (1987). A member of the Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, she has been a MacDowell Fellow and had a retrospective, The Long and Short of It, featured at the Sundance Film Festival.
Along with her film work, Aviva always painted and took art classes as her sanity practice. She has been a member of the New York Artists Circle since 2006.
Aviva lives in New York and shares her home with two rescue cats, Alfie and Lorenzo.
Artist statement
Many years of painting, along with many art classes, have been my sanity practice. I love the process of problem-solving with color, shape, and line—the constant challenge to find what works. This art-as-sanity practice perfectly complements my work as a documentary film director and editor, where every decision needs to move the story forward. In both painting and filmmaking, I strive for that moment of clarity when I finally feel, “It works. Leave it alone.” (Only to return later and think, “Maybe I can make it better!”)
