Biography
Cade Pemberton is a painter of colorful abstract and figurative works on canvas and paper. She grew up in the Southwest and moved to New York when she was 22. In addition to her art practice, she was an advertising copywriter for a number of years, specializing in beauty and fashion. She has a BA in Comparative Literature.
Her work is inspired by a number of sources ranging from nature to the subconscious to the intuitive process of painting itself. Painting in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, drawing, collage, and printmaking are her primary mediums.
Her main influences in the art include Joan Mitchell, Willem de Kooning, Gerard Richter, and Albert Oehlen. Largely self-taught, she has also studied at Cooper Union, the Art Students League, and the Studio School. She made her first prints as a member of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop.
Her work has been shown at the Painting Center, Southhampton Cultural Center, the National Arts Club, Mishkin Gallery, AIR Gallery, Synagogue for the Arts, and the Fountain Art Fair.
Her current studio is in Dumbo, Brooklyn, NY.
Artist statement
Intense colors, subtle shadows, flashes of light, and the erratic, dynamic energy of abstract or figurative shapes inform my paintings, drawings, printmaking, and collage work. I take inspiration from both the mystery of life, death, and nature and the shallow, jagged, in-your-face noise of advertising and social media. Diffuse planes, sharp edges, hard and soft shapes, and fields of color clash and push against each other in my work, never quite settling down. I love colors that shout. I love colors that whisper. My images are filled with suggestions and surprises, cryptic messages, and random graffiti. I am more interested in making art that generates questions, not answers.
I grew up in the Southwest but have lived my adult life in New York City. I drew obsessively as a child and I knew I would be an artist from the age of 5 although I took many other detours along the way. I made my living as a writer in advertising before I turned full-time to art. I have a studio in Dumbo, Brooklyn. NY.
