Biography
Cheryl Aden is a New York City-based fine art photographer. Her relationship with the camera began when she was a little girl, serving as her father’s model. She trained academically as an actress and singer but segued to a role behind the camera when she left the theatre and film world to become a photographer. Her theatrical training laid the groundwork for her emphasis on drama and visual storytelling in her photography. Cheryl studied at the International Center of Photography, where she also served as a Teaching Assistant. Recent exhibitions include "Luminous Elsewheres" at Westbeth Gallery, “Look This Way” at JVS Project Space, “Spliced Connections” at Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning, “Women Celebrate Women” at El Barrio’s Artspace PS109, Art Lives Here, and juried virtual exhibits at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, The Chateau Gallery and Gallerium’s Cancer: Never Give Up 2022.
Cheryl is a member of the New York Artists Circle and SHIM Art Network: Spliced Connector and is exhibited in several of their online exhibits. She is also an artist member of Art Lives Here NYC. Her book, “Apples & Oranges … A Photographic Essay” was published in 2021 and is available on Amazon and Itasca Books. Her photographs can be found in private collections nationwide. She also sells a line of holiday cards featuring a new fruit or vegetable every season.
Cheryl’s images explore the sensuosity and drama of the natural world, where organic life often takes center stage. Always a bit of a rebel, her work challenges the traditional notion of beauty.
Artist statement
I love to explore the sensuosity and drama of the natural world. Always a bit of a rebel, I challenge the notion of beauty and traditional views – exploring what is discarded as well as what is saved, what is mundane and commonplace as well as extraordinary. Organic life takes center stage – conveying stories of life and of decay.
