Biography
Darcy Spitz was born in Chicago and has lived in New York City for many years. She has a BFA in painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and an MFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. In addition, she studied Medieval manuscript illumination at the School of Sacred Arts in New York City.
She has had several solo shows in New York City and is a frequentl contributor to group shows. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Chase Manhattan Bank. She has had residencies at the Macdowell Colony and the Millay Colony.
Artist statement
My work explores the intersection of imagination, biology, memory, and emotion through drawings and paintings that inhabit a world between the microscopic and the psychological. Inspired by natural systems, music, dreams, and inner experience, I create intricate networks of forms that suggest cells, organisms, pathways, and landscapes that could exist in an alternate reality.
Working primarily in oil and graphite, I build compositions that evolve intuitively. Twisting structures, flowing currents, and interconnected shapes become visual metaphors for relationships, thoughts, emotions, and the unseen forces that shape our lives. My work depicts internal states and invisible connections.
Color, line, and texture play central roles in creating a sense of movement and vitality. Whether exuberant or contemplative, each piece invites viewers to discover their own narratives within these imagined ecosystems. I see every drawing and painting as a small universe—impossible yet familiar—where complexity, beauty, tension, and wonder coexist.
