Biography
After visiting Greenland twice in 2018 and 2019, Eleanor Goldstein created a magical series of portraits of ice that she calls “Icescapes.” In 2022 she was awarded an Arctic Circle Artist and Scientist Residency where she continued her work memorializing the melting ice.
Goldstein is a member of the National Association of Women Artists, and the Upstream Gallery in Hastings, NY, as well as a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, and a member of the New York Artists Circle.
Eleanor Goldstein is a Wurlitzer Foundation Fellow. Her work was commissioned by the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC; selected by the United States Art in the Embassies Program; and was exhibited at the Monmouth Museum in Lincroft, NJ and Rockefeller Gallery in Pocantico Hills, NY; as well as other galleries and museums in the US. Her work is in public and private collections in the US and abroad.
Most recently in 2024 her work was shown in "Biophilia: In Excelsis”, an exhibit that focused on our sacred ecosystems and their imminent transformation due to global warming. The show traveled from Yale Institute of Sacred Music to the United Nations Peace Boat and the Climate Imaginarium on Governor’s Island.
Artist statement
I am particularly interested in the cyclical relationship of decay and rejuvenation in all my surroundings. I employ an enormous range of media and my subjects are often drawn from the striking industrial landscapes and transcendent forms of nature I encounter.
In 2018 and 2019 I journeyed to Greenland to capture the disappearing icescapes I encountered there in paint. The resultant works comprise a series of very large, austere (primarily) watercolor paintings (entitled Requiem, and Night Shadows) which are intended to have an elegiac quality that speaks to the loss of the icebergs within the next decade as the climate warms.
I want the images to flow freely between the abstract and the real -- using light to inform and obscure.
In all my work, I invite the viewer to journey to places that are almost familiar.
