Biography
After receiving a BFA from Cooper Union in 1974, Ellen Grossman focused on three- dimensional work with emphasis on how surfaces interface with supportive or resistant forces. This remains an important metaphor. Grossman’s work on paper originated as exercises in relation of her development as a sculptor. Drawings constructed of successive topographic lines capture how structures build up through slight disturbances that get amplified by subsequent reactive lines. Date and time notations of when each draw line begins and ends offer insight into the drawing process, In 2011 and again in 2017 Grossman was awarded Fellowships by The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) for these drawings.
When confined to home during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic Grossman began transforming digital drawings into 1 minute animations suitable for short internet accessibility. This was done by transferring drawings done on an iPhone app and included the option for sound. Each drawing received considerable individual attention and outtakes from various animations have lent themselves to being rendered as fine art prints done using archival printing methods.
