Practice & background
Isis Davis-Marks is a New York–based multidisciplinary artist, educator and writer. Her visual work has been shown at venues including the Brooklyn Museum, Yale School of Art, SPRING/BREAK Art Show and Prizm Art Fair, alongside an ongoing practice in contemporary art criticism.
Her writing draws on philosophy and art history to address representation and visual culture, appearing in Smithsonian, Frieze, Artsy and The Art Newspaper. Her 2023 exhibition There is Another Sky takes its title from Emily Dickinson and considers spaces where real and imagined nature coexist.
In Who Art You, she recalls beginning with sewing and small abstract paintings, then stepping away under academic pressure and an imagined legal career. Returning to art in college helped her process her great-grandmother’s death. Fashion, dance and childhood objects now meet family history, advertising and healthcare in her images.
Looking at the work
Painting and writing juxtapose the visual appeal of fashion and everyday objects with family history, institutions and environmental concerns.
