Biography
Janice McDonnell is a Brooklyn-based artist currently focusing on painting still lifes. She received her training predominantly from the Art Students League in New York. Janice has had the good fortune of being selected as an Artist-in-Residence at the Vermont Studio Center, The Brooklyn Navy Yard, and BreckCreate in Breckenridge, CO.
Artist statement
I’m a Brooklyn-based painter and visual artist, drawing inspiration from the everyday—observing the places, people, and objects that shape my life. My earlier work, influenced by my industrial neighborhood, contrasts human-made structures with nature. During the pandemic, I shifted to still lifes, creating “52 Paintings,” a year-long project capturing objects from my studio and sharing them weekly on social media. Recently, my focus has returned to people in urban spaces, especially the unique relationships between them and their animals. I strive to find beauty in overlooked moments, revealing subtle themes that emerge through observation.
