Practice & background
Jos Prol is a Brooklyn artist working in painting and sculpture at the boundary of natural and constructed worlds. Training in architecture and work in structural engineering inform his sense of geometry, while a sustained connection to the Gowanus Canal centers place, ecology and material.
Through the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club, he repeatedly encountered driftwood and developed a renewed sense of place. In an interview on his website, he regards these pieces as travelers carrying unknown histories, using cuts, rings and color to suggest new accounts of time.
Who Art You focuses on the surprises of three-dimensional color: planning cannot fully predict how a completed object changes as it turns. He discusses salvaged wood, storm-fallen branches and an American beech series, recalling his first multidimensional-pixel work as a pivotal breakthrough.
