Biography
Born, raised, and educated in Mexico, Luis got his degree in Architecture from the Anahuac University in Mexico City in 1975. After twenty years of practicing architecture and following a long journey throughout Europe, he decided to turn his attention to the plastic arts.
In 1994, following his marriage, Luis moved to the USA. Since 1999 he has been living in New York City with his wife Lynne.
Artist statement
I was not born an artist, I want to become an artist.
After my involvement with a group of architects painting on weekends, I started painting watercolors. In the beginning, my subject was man-made structures, mainly buildings, and their surroundings. Old, weathered colonial buildings in the Historic Center of Mexico City. I preserved their history by restoring a little bit of the beauty and dignity, that they lost when they were surrounded by modern constructions. Through my paintings, people started to look at these buildings with renewed appreciation.
Now, almost thirty years since I committed to this work, my intention remains although my subjects and techniques are more diverse.
