Biography
A New York native living in the Hudson Valley and NYC, Friedman's oil paintings and drawings have been shown in solo exhibitions at the Booth Western Art Museum (GA), the James McNeil Whistler Museum (MA), the Galleria Nacional Museum in Costa Rica, numerous solo shows in New York City including recent exhibits in the Chelsea District and the mid-Hudson Valley.
Her work has featured in recent juried exhibits including the Annual Hudson Mohawk Regional, at the Albany Institute of Art & History; " Alpine & Riverine" at the Woodstock Art Association and Museum (2023) and "Spirit of Woodstock" (Summer 2024).
Friedman received a BA and MFA in Art from Queens College, an Ed.D from Columbia University, and studied at the New York Studio School.
Her work was selected by the U.S. Department of State Art-In-Embassies Program for the US Embassy in Benin, West Africa (2023-present), Djibouti, East Africa, and Colombo, Sri Lanka and is featured in corporate collections including Pfizer, McGraw Hill, IBM, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, Pace University, Ritz Carlton Hotels, and Metropolitan National Bank.
She has received nine artist residency grants over the past 25 years including Provence, France (2023), as well as recently in Tuscany and Umbria, Italy (2024). Previous residencies included in Spain, Costa Rica, Ireland, and France.
Artist statement
My work is based on abstraction and landscape ideas. I am inspired by nature, transcience, and the possibility of renewal. Time and contemplation gradually modify my vision. According to Cezanne, the two attributes essential to the artist are "the eye for the vision of nature and the brain for the logic of organized sensations."
On the Drawings and Works on Paper
Workiing from nature and intuiting molecules, electrons, protons and neutrons moving, regrouping iand merging n space these images were created in southern France during the Mistral in 2023 and in Italy in 2024.
The earlier work began at a residency in Annamakheerig,Ireland during rainy days spent in a Conservatory observing growing plants and ideas about growth and change continued as I returned to my studio in the Hudson Valley.
On the Aerial Views and other Landscapes
I seek to explore large expanses of physical space, the quality of light and interpret physucal reality.
Aerial views have a thematic thread running throughout. Painting the landscape as seen from above or as seen from a distance began a process that has developed into a defining element of my works. The references to the natural world are expansive. There is perhaps a sense of nostalgia for a large visual field rather than a specificity of place.
I combine aspects of observation, memory, and imagination. The evocative horizon line often stabilizes the concepts.
Dsappearing Glaciers is commentary on our environmental challenges with a heating climate.
About the geometric abstractions:
I apply abstraction and geometry as organizing and fragmenting tools for processing those unsettling characteristics of everyday life. Employing abstraction without representational imagery also alludes to spiritual concepts in an effort to understand our existence.
The content is the sum of organized tensions and its reality lies in the dynamic relation of forms one to another. Tilting of forms represents the notion of an elemental structure whether spiritual or scientific rendered illegible by the disorder of modern life. I seek to explore discord and loss of equilibrium to overthrow expectations.
