Practice & background
Sauer studied painting at the Herron School of Art + Design in Indianapolis and lives and works in Brooklyn. Drawing, painting and events connect her interest in attention with opportunities for people to encounter art and each other.
In the interview, Density Study compresses lines and layers into a small space until marks approach the effect of watercolor washes. A studio conversation prompted her to question the assumption that developing a practice means making ever-larger work.
With Krystiana she runs Circling, a publication, artist collective and event studio. Residencies include ChaNorth, Jen Tough Gallery and Delight Factory. In the interview she values community-garden mark-making workshops and exhibitions organized with friends.
Looking at the work
Slow, repeated marks make density a visible expression of time and attention.
