Biography
Manuel Macarrulla came to New York from the Dominican Republic with his family when he was 10 years old. He has lived in the New York area most of his life. While in High School, he took a great interest in art, from which he has never deviated, eventually studying painting at The University of Pennsylvania. His work reflects his roots and bi-cultural background. He has exhibited widely and his work is represented in numerous public and private collections. He has two children from a previous marriage and lives on Long Island with his current wife.
Artist statement
I believe in an art that is fully human, conveying my thoughts, feelings, and personality, and that can also entertain. While the artist needs to be in control of the medium, formalism as an end goal can seem empty. The art of the past informs my work as a language used for the purpose of communicating my relationship to nature and society with clarity, humor and passion. A major impetus for my work has always remained by love of drawing. Capturing the life of animals, people, and places, embodies a strong magic for me.
