Marcene Glover

Biography

Marcene Glover paints from personal observations through years of experience in the arts, as Courtroom Artist, Congressional Portrait Artist, Fibers Designer, Illustrator, Arts in Wellness Painter, Fine Arts Teacher, Residency Host, and Cultural Arts Curator, ranging in activities from helping heal and inspire chronic pain patients to incarcerated youth, to representing many rich cultural traditions, to interviewing and collaborating with Congressional members and civil rights leaders, aesthetically representing their issues. These enriching experiences inform the content of her paintings.

Glover paints and exhibits in the United States, France, Italy, and Norway. Her work is commissioned by US members of Congress. It hangs in over 20 public buildings, in permanent collections of museums, galleries, universities, and a Congressional library. Her fine arts education is from Seton Hill University, and residencies in Southern France, Florence Italy, and with Touchstone Center for Crafts and Dacia Gallery NYC. 

Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art said "Glover has become a highly sought after artist, due in part to her unique mixed-media and mixed-style approach, which allows her to express her subject's political views and personal heritage, in addition to creating a direct visual representation."  According to Erie Art Museum, "Glover's work is socially conscious; more artists should be working this way."  Krause Gallery RI said "What's appealing about Glover's work is it has strong sense of place”. Bottle Works Arts describes "Marcene's oversized works literally sweep the viewer into the space where you feel the energy of the setting".

Artist statement

We seem to constantly be going through changes, whether personal or social, from quiet general shifts to volatile quakes. So movement is important in my work. I create transparent texture between layers of glaze and fluid washes of paint, to elicit an unfixed state of being. This refers to the transient nature of our everyday situations, requiring us to pull inspiration from our surroundings. The paintings create an energy inviting the viewer to relate their own emotional transitions through obstacles. Barrier lines and veils separate the realms. Elements in nature and personal symbols act as talismans, breaking through those barriers.

I don’t paint the olive tree; I paint about the olive tree, as representational elements evoke signs of hope that may be carried through the wind, soundwaves, memories, passing of time, or rippled reflections.
