Practice & background
Baker works across fiber, wearable art, ceramic-textile objects and participatory installation. In the interview she recalls game-design work involving Disney and Mattel before moving into ceramics and fiber when her circumstances allowed.
Her artist statement describes fiber as a way to build worlds. Soft thread and cloth meet questions of authority, belonging and control, while weaving, knitting and sculpture bring strength and vulnerability into the same object.
Her Los Angeles Art Association portfolio includes Amanda’s Sunny Disposition, Suburban Stories and Full moon on planet Drion. These works provide entry points into her invented worlds and connect the career transition described in the interview with material form.
Looking at the work
She uses fiber’s texture, volume and flexibility to give social rituals and contradictions a tangible form.
