Biography

BIO

Pat Miller is a mixed media artist who creates land and seascapes using acrylic, collage and/or assemblage.   Her primary goal in developing these abstract and semi-abstract images is to raise viewers' awareness of both nature's beauty and vulnerability. She has been included in several group shows in the metropolitan New York area; and during the pandemic, Pat’s work has been seen online, in venues such as Carter Burden Gallery, New York Artists Circle, and Artsy.net.  

Prior to having a family, Pat studied art history at the Louvre in Paris, and through the years, she has enjoyed capturing the beauty of nature in her sketchbooks as she traveled at home and abroad.

Formerly a professor of occupational therapy and gerontology at Columbia University, where she also received her doctorate, Pat currently lives, studies, and creates art on the Upper East Side of NYC.

Artist statement

As a retired professor of occupational therapy and gerontology at Columbia University, and more recently a self-described late-life artist, I ask myself what role can I play to support the preservation of the environment? My consciousness about the beauty and vulnerability of nature has been heightened by both the global climate crisis and by my stage of life, which allows more time for reflection. Every landscape awakens the senses and makes one aware of the uniqueness of different environments. Glaciers are seen chunking and melting in my work, while a rain forest shows various types of trees sharing the soil’s nutrients peacefully, as we would wish for in a multi-cultural world.

I aspire to create dynamic and lyrical abstract compositions. The subjects for my art vary, as I capture numerous aspects of nature that I have been privileged to see at home and abroad. The 3-dimensional elements of my work are designed to add movement and power to the composition and the message. Detailed descriptions of my inspiration for creating a particular artwork and the materials I use will be described in each of my albums.
