Biography
Phyllis Chillingworth paints from both observation and memory. Her subject, derived from her personal point of view, is mostly from nature with the rich symbolism it provides. The execution of her paintings is anchored in the long history of aesthetics and the relevant relationship to our time. Her main intention is to transform her images into universal ones. Describing her painting, Chillingworth reveals:
”I use the events I experience to bring others an echo of what resonates in me. I want viewers to connect with the energy of my paintings and to discover a new perception for themselves.”
”Cosmos...a personal journey,” 2021, will be Phyllis’s fifth solo exhibition at Atlantic Gallery, NYC. The show will run from March 30th through April 17th. The paintings (oil, watercolor & egg tempera) express an essence of freedom found in life and embody her personal perceptions and moods evident in the range of passages and scenes.
The Cosmos is presented as a metaphor for her unified statement of wonders and intimate views of past and present journeys of perception and memory.
Phyllis Chillingworth lives in NYC and Montauk, NY. She earned a BS from The Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, and a BF/MFA from The Yale School of Art & Architecture. Her two animated films produced while in grad school were recently featured in a festival “Celebrating Yale Women Filmmakers.” They are now preserved in Yale Film Archives. Her past work in film continues to affect her paintings. Phyllis has studied with Ophrah Shemesh in NYC and at Visual Arts Italy, Gaeta, Italy. Phyllis is a member of Atlantic Gallery, NYC.

Artist statement
“In nature every moment is new…nothing is secure but life, transition, and the energizing spirit. Nature is indefinable, immeasurable, but we know that it pervades and contains us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
There is an energy that propels me to paint when I am moved by profound moments. While in that process, the world expands and I am driven to discover new ways to express the experience. These forces become symbols of our currents of life, our moods, and our internal navigations. The rhythm, power, and transitory aspect of nature are transformative. I would like viewers to connect with my paintings and to discover a new perception for themselves.
I believe our connection to nature is increasingly relevant and more essential today than ever before. Painting in three different mediums gives me the opportunity to express the boldness of oil, the air of watercolor, and the symbolism of egg tempera. Always present is the energy of the gesture and the sensation of color.
