Artists Bio

Robin Seligman-Schmidt, born on Long Island, has been a Manhattan resident for many years. She has a BFA from Syracuse University during which she spent a year studying art in London. She also lived in Germany for many years, where she studied painting. She has a BA from Parsons School of Design in Interior Design. A painter and printmaker, she studied painting for many years at the 92nd street Y and has been studying printmaking at the Carter Burden Covello Center.  There she had a residency from January through April 2025, followed by a solo exhibit. Robin has been part of several group shows and had a solo exhibit at John Jay College.

Artist statement

My images are derived from nature and the world around me. I respond to nature and how lines, shapes and colors interact with each other.

In my art practice I am focusing on abstracting the colors and lines I observe. I concentrate on the juxtaposition of how the elements play off each other, how the lines evoke movement and how the spaces are created by the colors and forms of nature. In my printmaking I often start out with shapes cut from craft foam, these shapes are also inspired from nature. More often than not they begin as test papers on newsprint and end up as finished images many iterations later. I enjoy the layering that these shapes create and the spaces they form.

For many years I worked mostly with watercolors on paper and more recently I began making monotypes. I find the differences between the art forms intriguing. I am particularly interested in the transparencies created in both mediums.
