Seba Calfuqueo
Performance, installation, ceramics & video
Seba Calfuqueo works with the body, synthetic hair and moving images to explore Mapuche knowledge, colonial histories and relationships with land.

Profile & practice
Chilean Mapuche artist Seba Calfuqueo works across performance, installation, ceramics and video, examining tensions between Indigenous and Western perspectives. Cultural experience informs a practice concerned with gender, environmental rights and relationships between people and nature.
PASADO/FUTURA (2023) brings synthetic hair, costume and bodily movement into performance. Hair is used to write KAL, the Mapudungun word for hair, connecting a bodily material with language and Indigenous identity.
Frieze New York’s 2026 presentation explores belonging and the body through unconventional materials. W-galería received the Focus Stand Prize, and work entered the Baltimore Museum of Art collection through the Sherman Family Foundation Acquisition Fund.
Looking & thinking
Begin with the way hair moves between body, costume, writing and space, then consider how that transformation connects language, identity and land.
