Practice & background

Cai is a curator, writer, educator and multimedia artist with a double major in computer science and studio art from Bard College and a graduate degree from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. NARS Foundation highlights their interest in community connections and diverse voices.

Ultimate Vending Machine sells aspects of the vending process itself, drawing attention to labor concealed by technology. The later vending shuang offers identity gift cards for different professional skills, asking how a creator’s time and expertise enter exchange.

With Kari Love and David Rios, Cai developed Vape Synth, repurposing discarded rechargeable vapes as synthesizers. Other projects explore low-cost mist makers, scent associations and participatory curation, combining fabrication and code to question familiar tools.
