Practice & background

Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Stephen Hall moved to New York in 1978 and began exhibiting in the East Village in the early 1980s. His official biography records early exhibitions alongside Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and Mark Kostabi.

Recent paintings address habitat loss, corporate responsibility, consumerism and waste. Layered hand painting builds density and light, placing carefully rendered surfaces in tension with unsettling environmental narratives.

Earth Matters began with Fat Free Ocean and its illusion of a three-dimensional plastic background. Another body of work paints a trompe-l’œil gilt frame directly onto the canvas, questioning what museums and history designate as important.

Looking at the work

Layering, light and illusion connect traditional painting methods with nature, consumer objects and human-made crises.
