Biography
Suzanne Pemberton was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated with a degree in Fashion Design from Bennett College. She worked for Vogue magazine and Women's Wear Daily in New York and Los Angeles. She transitioned to a career in costume design for television and film in Los Angeles. Returning to New York and starting a family, Pemberton pursued her studies of painting and fine art at the Art Student's League and the National Academy School of Fine Arts.
Pemberton's work has been exhibited at juried shows at the National Academy, Dacia Gallery, Plaxall Gallery, Dougherty Gallery in New York, Gallery Sitka in Newport and Guild Hall in East Hampton, NY. She has paintings in private collections in Germany, England, the Bahamas, and the United States.
Pemberton lives in New York City and works out of her studio in Long Island City. She is a member of the United Scenic Artists, LIC Artists, and the New York Artist's Circle
Artist statement
The land and the sea and the atmosphere surrounding them have been my inspiration for painting. I have tried to capture the beauty of the natural environment while also reflecting on the need to protect and preserve our open land and oceans. Working in oil and acrylic, I have explored these interconnected themes both realistically and conceptually.
I develop my artwork into series-based groups, often choosing new mediums or techniques to convey new ideas. Currently I am painting conceptual landscapes based on the environment of eastern Long Island.
My past series include Waterlines which reflects on the repercussions of rising tides driven by climate change. My Sea Dreams series dives into the undersea world and the urgency of protecting our reefs and oceans. The Waterforce series, using acrylic inks in broad gestural marks, portrays the force of the sea which can be destructive but may hold the potential for a new energy source.
