Biography
Tamar Michaeli is a New York based sculptural ceramic artist and printmaker. She trained in ceramics at the NYC ceramic studios of Greenwich House and of Columbia University – Teachers College. She attended an in residence ceramic workshop at Alfred University. An in residence workshop at MASS MOCA provided training in printing. Her prior academic career in research in molecular biology enriches her work with microscopy based images. She has a national reputation and her work has been shown in juried exhibitions in galleries in New York City, Westchester county, Massachusetts and California. Her works are found in private collections.
Artist statement
I am a sculptural ceramic artist, and a printmaker. Reverence for nature is a major underlying force in my work. As a life long biologist and naturalist, many of my works explore the complexity, interdependence and beauty of the natural world. Using different hand building techniques, I use clay to create abstract, organic forms many of them related to living organisms as they appear naturally or under microscopes, others are related to landscapes and geological formations, to habitats, and to other aspects of life and imagination.
A particular focus of this work is on the human brain captured on ceramic neural plates and drypoint prints. These works are based on microscopic views of neurons, and reflect the beauty and interconnectivity of the brain.
A major recent focus in my work is on different notions of living spaces - niches of safety or danger, places of beauty and respite from world’s demands, those with power forces and connections, and the failing ones. All reflecting emotions, life events and notions of homes.
My work in clay explores worlds of past and present life experiences, hidden and openly accessible experiences, visual, sensual and emotional experiences, as they mysteriously take form and shape in my hands. Touching this impressionable material is stepping into a world of infinite possibilities my fingertips discover and fashion. A way to reach and capture momentary experiences and lasting perceptions of resonance. The intersection of art and science in my work reflects the advanced world we live in and the reality of our culture.
