Practice & background
Yi Yang is a New York-based multimedia artist working with wearable devices, sculpture, interactive installation, performance, sound and video. Their wearable practice brings objects into direct contact with the body.
They earned a BFA at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and an MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. Their official biography lists exhibitions at the CAFA Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Beijing, RISD Museum and CICA Museum in Korea.
In Celine’s interview, Yi Yang explains that the robotic spine is worn on the back and responds to gestures through a muscle sensor. This provides a concrete question for viewing: how does a moving external structure change the perceived boundary of the body?
