Biography

Yvonne Lamar-Rogers is a mixed media artist / jewelry designer/ and retired teaching artist, based in New York City. For many years, Yvonne's main focus has been sharing her gifts of creativity as a teaching artist. At this time in her life, her passion for creating her own art has been renewed. Yvonne is best known for creating mixed media art that tells vivid, textural stories that are mostly inspired by her own experiences and memories of growing up in culturally rich Detroit, MI during the 50s & 60s. She now has new experiences and memories as additional inspiration for her art making.

Yvonne curates Women Celebrate Women, an annual, multi generational exhibition that features the true diversity of NY based female artists as they share their creative visions that celebrate women.

The greatest concentration of Yvonne's formal art education was at the College For Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. She earned her BA with an emphasis in Art Education from Marymount Manhattan College in New York.

Artist statement

My love for making things was first influenced by the colorful and textural array of fabrics, delicate tissue paper patterns, buttons, and threads used by my mother, who was an exceptional professional seamstress. Cutting and sewing doll clothes made from scraps of fabric given to me by my mother eventually led me to my own art form, mixed media collage, and assemblage. Mixed media has proven to be the ideal vehicle to express the stories I want to share.

I may use wet and or dry media along with torn pieces of paper, scraps of fabric, photography, and printmaking as well as clay. There is absolutely no limit to the materials or techniques I'll experiment with. My visual stories may be in the form of mixed media collage and assemblage, sculptural artist books, weavings, monotypes, decorative boxes, or painted furniture. I find mixed media to be exciting, challenging, and always, a journey of exploration and discovery. My one-of-a-kind collage jewelry that is made from recycled paper was born out of my journey with mixed media art.
