Acrylic on wood door, 80" x 30", 1989 In June of 1989 student-led demonstrations for democracy and free speech held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing were forcibly put down brutally by the Chinese government in what can only be described as a massacre. P.S. 1 MoMA had an exhibit of individually painted doors by artists arranged to form a maze. Each door could be seen from the front and the back. The title I chose "Let 100 Flowers Bloom" is the slogan Mao Zedong used as a call for freedom of thought and speech within the Chinese Communist Party.
