MoMA and the Metropolitan Opera: Collections and Stage Narratives
An extension of New York art week in 2026
How the display of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s work enters into dialogue with the sound, staging and narrative of opera.
Where Collection Displays and Stage Narratives Meet
I treat Frida and Diego The Last Dream as a separate extension because it asks different questions from an art fair. MoMA’s exhibition ran from 21 March to 12 September 2026. Created in collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego, it placed works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera in a theatrical setting designed by Jon Bausor. Gabriela Lena Frank composed the opera, with a libretto by Nilo Cruz. Its fictional premise begins three years after Kahlo’s death, when Rivera summons her back on the Day of the Dead. In this arrangement, I am interested in how a setting affects the reading of a work. Dark and green walls, layered frames and stage-like structures place self-portraits within a narrative environment of life, death, memory and reunion, beyond their existence as individually hung images. Such an installation can give audiences different routes toward familiar artists. It also makes it more important to distinguish what the paintings themselves offer from what the opera’s fictional story adds. The two can illuminate one another, but the opera’s plot cannot be treated as factual evidence of the artists’ lives.
Considering this alongside Nicolas Party’s spaces, the tubular framework of the Comme des Garçons presentation and television installations at the fairs makes me more conscious that looking always happens in a particular environment. Light, backgrounds, frames and walking routes organise attention. An effective setting can clarify a work’s questions, but can also dominate the viewer’s response. When I describe a sense of immersion, I therefore want to identify the spatial arrangements that produce it and ask whether they genuinely make the work easier to understand.
