Rachel Urkowitz
Mixed media, sculpture, collage & design
Rachel Urkowitz moves from painting into sculptural environments made with paper, color and plant-like forms, and translates scientific research into collage.

Profile & practice
Artist and designer Rachel Urkowitz works across painting, sculpture, installation and collage, with an interest in color, nature and perception. She teaches at Parsons School of Design; the school also records her stop-motion animation and children’s textile and furniture design.
Leave of Grass (for Walt Whitman) (2019) creates a variable-size environment of plant-like forms. Vertical Greensward (2005–2014) uses paper sculpture to respond to ideas behind Central Park and the cultural ideal of a perfect lawn.
She also works with medical-journal editors and researchers to interpret research through scientific illustration and paper collage. Across large spaces and small images, form becomes a way to guide understanding.
Looking & thinking
Notice how paper is folded, cut and arranged, and how plant-like forms shift the scale of an interior. Compare the ways an installation and a journal illustration organize information.
