Canyon de Chelly, Navajo Territories

About the work

Collage using hand-painted papers and watercolor 39" x 33" 2016 This image came about after a trip to the Navajo lands. We took photos on a Navajo-guided jeep ride at the bottom of the canyon. When I looked back at my photos this one of two figures on horseback caught my eye. I wanted to show how the people live there and tend their lands. I also wanted to represent the textures and colors of the place. I thought back to my days as a batik artist when I painted with wax and dyes on fabric. This time instead of painting on fabric, I was inspired to create this collage using hand-painted papers in my studio
