About the work

This triple portrait of the Mirabal sisters recognizes the rededication (1997) of Trujillo's obelisk (which he originally erected in his own honor) to the Mirabal sisters. The originally white structure was now painted with murals on its four sides honoring the sisters. The story of the Mirabal sisters is told in the novel "In the Time of the Butterflies," by Julia Alvarez.
