About the work

At face value, this is simply a carnival parade on the seaside drive in the city of Santo Domingo, known popularly as "El Malecón". However, it contains two references to American influence and military authority. One is "George Washington Avenue" in the title, the thoroughfare's formal name, and the presence of a Washington Monument in the center. In fact, the Dictator Trujillo erected this in his own honor in 1937.
