China 2025: structural change in a downturn
A decade of market development, accessible price bands and resale pressure
The inaugural report studies Modern and Contemporary auctions in 2015–2024, explaining how a stronger long-term regional position can coexist with a sharp annual downturn.

China Art Market Report 2025- A rising decade-long share can coexist with falling annual sales.
- High-value concentration contrasts with activity at accessible price points.
- Short-term resale pressure makes timing and sample limitations essential.
Figures refer to the source samples and survey period; expectations are not realised outcomes.
What participation continues when expensive transactions retreat?
A decade of development is not one year’s cycle
The region’s share of the selected global Modern and Contemporary sample rose from roughly 7% in 2015 to 14% in 2024.
Regional sales nevertheless fell 33.1% in 2024. Relative position and absolute turnover can move differently, while infrastructure develops over a longer horizon than auction cycles.
Source report pages · 6–15Internationalisation retains regional distinctions
International artists represented 44.1% of regional value and 31.4% of lots in 2024. Important markets for Zao Wou-Ki, Sanyu, Kusama and Nara also reflect cross-border histories.
Hong Kong’s value concentration differs from Mainland volume and price-band patterns. The region is neither one taste community nor exclusively a market for locally born artists.

Source report pages · 9–19How concentration magnifies contraction
Lots above $1 million represented 3.4% of volume but 63.7% of value, making totals sensitive to high-end supply. This tier accounted for roughly two-thirds of the contraction.
Volume fell 14.5%, less than value. Activity persisted at different price levels, without proving either that all collectors withdrew or that artists’ incomes were unaffected.
Take with youConcentrated totals amplify changes in a small number of transactions.
Source report pages · 21–25Below $50,000, a different picture emerges
Activity below $50,000 includes both lower-priced works by established names and emerging artists. A lower price band is not an age category.
Accessible pricing can support varied collecting motivations, but auction activity alone cannot establish primary-market artist income. The route through which a work is purchased matters.
Source report pages · 21、26–29Diversity requires more than a sales result
The report tracks younger and women artists, but artist counts, lot counts and sales-value shares measure different forms of representation.
One auction appearance need not become sustained visibility. Equally, a lower sales total does not by itself indicate declining cultural significance.
Source report pages · 30–37What short-term resale pressure can teach
Short-held works and Young Contemporary resales faced pronounced pressure in the 2024 Hong Kong evening-sale sample, against a backdrop of pandemic-era pricing and correction.
Stronger long-holding-period groups do not prove that every work appreciates with time. Sample selection, missing private trades and costs limit the inference. This reading avoids conflating differing short-term figures across the report.
Take with youTime supports collecting; it does not replace research and judgement.

How trading and cultural infrastructure can reinforce each other
A market centre also brings works, specialists and audiences together. Galleries, museums, fairs and trading services can give a visit several purposes. The report places institutional development alongside market growth.
Concentration does not ensure broadly distributed benefits. Global trophy activity differs from local studio conditions, research and public education.
Separate trading capacity from cultural capacity: one enables transactions, the other sustains creation and understanding. Their connection matters more than a rank alone.
Analysis references · source pages · 9–19Several mechanisms can produce lower-price activity
Lower-price activity can arise from new collectors, reduced budgets, a different mix of works or absent trophy supply. These mechanisms have different implications and cannot be identified from lot counts alone.
New entry calls for following continued participation; budget shifts call for understanding changed priorities; absent high-end supply can raise a lower tier’s share without its own expansion. These are alternative interpretations, not established causes.
Lower prices can also reflect medium, scale or edition. Price bands should not become a hierarchy of cultural worth.

| Measure | What it shows | Read alongside |
|---|---|---|
| Value down 33.1% | A contraction in monetary turnover | High-end supply and price mix |
| Volume down 14.5% | A change in transaction count | Work types and average prices |
| Decade share roughly 7% → 14% | Changing relative position | Changes in the comparison markets |
See pp. 6–15 and 21–25. The decade share and annual changes use different time baselines.

Methodology & source
The dataset covers selected Hong Kong and Mainland sales at Poly, China Guardian, Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips, with over 32,000 offered lots and 4,070 artists in 2015–2024, using hammer prices. Hong Kong evening-sale resale analysis instead uses premium-inclusive prices and some unsold estimates. Private intervening trades may be invisible. Generational boundaries differ from the next edition; comparisons require common coverage.
